Inner West Landscaping Sydney | Courtyard Garden Builders
The Inner West is not an empty block. Yards are small, already built against the house, and constrained by what sits on every side: a rear lane that will take a barrow and little else, winter shade from a two-storey neighbour, reactive clay under failed concrete, and heritage brick that is to remain.
DC designs, constructs and maintains courtyard gardens for those conditions. The work is measured, built and planted to the lot that exists — not to an acreage template brought in from the edge of the city.
We work through design, council documentation where it is required, construction and ongoing care so the courtyard remains usable after the scaffolding comes down.

Where Our Landscaping Process Begins
DC is engaged to design, construct and maintain courtyard gardens behind Inner West terraces and cottages — work that is built on site, not left as a drawing in an inbox.
Residential gardens on small lots are specified to the conditions of that block. The fee follows the site: access, levels, existing fabric and council constraints. The scope is set out before work starts, and the client sees what is included as the job proceeds.
A completed courtyard on a terrace in Newtown, Balmain, Glebe or Marrickville changes how the house is used and how it reads. That is the point of the work — not a collection of pots against the back wall.
Products, plants and construction are chosen for the building that is already there. A Glebe terrace and a Marrickville cottage are not specified from the same list.

Landscape Design Inner West Sydney
Garden design begins on site. The courtyard is measured with you present: how the space is to be used, and what the block will reasonably support.
You receive a scaled CAD drawing. The first issue is for review. When the final design is signed off, the work is quoted from that set.
The practice is small urban courtyards, narrow side yards, and front gardens that must accommodate a fence, a bin store and planting that will survive the conditions. It is not country-garden work, and it is not a decorative overlay on an inherited plan.

Landscape Construction and Garden Care
Landscape construction
DC builds from the signed-off CAD: decks, masonry, fences, planting and irrigation — hardscape and softscape as one contract. Materials are specified for Inner West shade, clay and lane access, not for a catalogue photograph.
These sites are small and already constrained by the house. Access is typically a rear lane or through the dwelling. Existing slabs sit on clay. The skip, the neighbour and the sequence are planned before the first break-out. Programme and budget are set against that access.
Garden care
Scheduled maintenance across the Inner West. The same crew returns to prune, weed, feed and check irrigation so a courtyard in Newtown or Balmain does not decline after handover.
Care is specified from the original plan. It is not passed to a separate team that did not build the garden.
Where we work
The housing is terraces, cottages and warehouse conversions. Clay in Marrickville. Sandstone on the Balmain peninsula. Shade from two-storey neighbours through most of the Inner West.

Landscape Articles Inner West Sydney
DA Approvals for Building Works
This article explains when landscaping work in the Inner West needs Council consent, how owner and neighbour consent actually works, and what a typical application looks like. It is written for real courtyard and garden projects — fences, footings, retaining walls, paving, trees and outdoor structures — not generic “house extensions”
Dual occupancy in a Ku-ring-gai garden suburb
What a dual occupancy does to a Ku-ring-gai backyard — 1,015 m² vs 450 m² lots, 50% landscaped area, 30% deep soil, 200 L trees, APZs — and how to keep the leftover courtyard as a garden
When the neighbour is 28 storeys: Gordon’s new height, and the Edgecliff–Woollahra rezoning
Ku-ring-gai’s Gordon precinct now allows tower height on a key town-centre site. The State is planning up to 10,000 homes around Edgecliff and a new Woollahra station. What that does to a single-house courtyard
.
Shared boundary fencing: who pays, where it sits, how high, and when the footing is finished
Who pays for a Sydney dividing fence, how far it can sit off the line, exempt heights, wind and engineering, reusing a masonry footing, trees, services, heritage and NCAT.
The three-day DA pack: Inner West will send it back
From September 2025 Inner West can return an incomplete DA in three calendar days. What has to be in the Planning Portal pack — survey, owner’s consent, landscape plan, trees and stormwater — so the clock does not reset.
